NASA TV is the US space agency’s round-the-clock educational broadcasting available online and on your TV sets. Spread between three channels, NASA TV covers everything from live SpaceX cargo launches to deep space exploration missions of our solar system. But today, NASA TV will focus on one mission in particular: the landing of the Mars rover Perseverance.

Perseverance is just a few hours away from diving into the Red Planet’s atmosphere, aiming to land north of the Martian equator in Jezero Crater.

Although Perseverance is the fifth rover NASA has launched to Mars, it is the first mission to focus almost exclusively on the search for past alien life.

If that was not exciting enough, there is no real guarantee the rover will reach the planet’s surface unscathed.

Only about 50 percent of all mission to Mars have succeeded and Perseverance faces a complicated and terrifying landing sequence known as the “seven minutes of terror”.

In other words, you will not want to miss any of the action today.

How to watch the Mars landing live today:

There are multiple ways you can watch NASA TV live today, including the embedded YouTube video above.

Coverage of the Mars landing will kick off at 7.15pm GMT (2.15pm EST, 11.15am PST).

The space agency said: “NASA will provide multiple feeds of live landing coverage of the Perseverance Mars Rover, leading up to the rover’s landing at approximately 3.55pm EST (8.55pm GMT).”

NASA TV’s channels can be accessed through multiple apps or third-party services, such as Roku or Amazon Fire TV. These include:

  • Google Fibre
  • DirectTV
  • DISH Network

Viewers with satellite reception can also find NASA TV on Satellite Galaxy 13 in North America, Alaska and Hawaii.

According to NASA, you will need Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) compliant Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) for reception.

NASA’s Mars rover will land in Jezero today to search the ancient impact crater for evidence of past alien life.

Jezero is a basin where scientists are certain water flowed when Mars resembled a young Earth nearly 4 billion years ago.

Water is a basic building block of life as we know it and its presence on Mars suggests life may have developed there once.

Unfortunately, NASA’s rover is not headed to Mars to find evidence of little green men running around.

Instead, the rover will collect and analyse rock samples for signs of chemical biomarkers.

Perseverance will also collect and securely store samples that NASA and European partners hope to retrieve in the 2030s.

Dr Daniel Brown, an astronomy expert at Nottingham Trent University, said: “This is a really exciting mission, bringing a host of highly-advanced equipment to the surface and landing in an area that could not be more promising to find traces of life.

“What a climax to the past few days of Mars missions.”

The expert added: “The rover will be able to image the surface in detail but also gather drilled rock samples which it will leave behind on the surface for future follow-up missions in 2026 that will return these samples hopefully by 2031.”
