New pub opening just for people who want to drink alone and social distance

A new pub is opening just for solo drinkers who don't want to mingle with others.

Pubs are usually the place we envision meeting up with pals, getting a bit boozy and making new friends of acquaintances,

While pubs remain shut in almost all of the UK, Japan has pretty much returned to normality due to their incredibly quick and strict handling of COVID-19.

So much so that they've been opening new pubs and bars left right and centre, one of which is Juden Highball set in the city of Hakodate.

The new haunt has been created for those who love their solitude – but also a drink – in mind, allowing those to visit and grab a drink without having to mingle with others.

Covid was at the forefront of the Japanese pub designer's mind, as the country is well-known for its innovative and forward-thinking designs.

Set in the Hokkaido Prefecture, every seat in the Juden Highball is in a solo booth, which allows social distancing while you enjoy a drink and, as per Japanese drinking culture, a few side dishes.

As everyone has their own booths, it won't be as easy to grab a staff member to take your order, so the forward-thinking pub has installed a tablet for every seat.

  • Pubs and restaurants could stay shut until May – but gyms may reopen in April

As well as this, there's also free Wi-fi and power plugs so you can charge your devices or even work in peace at the same time.

Set to open later this week on Friday, January 5, the pub takes inspiration for its name from juden, the Japanese word for "recharge".

According to Sora News 24, this symbolises the pub’s hope that it can serve as an oasis for people who are feeling emotionally drained as a result of the severe lifestyle changes as a result of the pandemic.

However, even when the pandemic eventually ends, Juden Highball will serve as the perfect spot for introverts who want a beer, cocktail, or glass of sake.

It'll be open from Friday from 6pm-3am every day apart from Sundays when it'll close a bit earlier at midnight.
