POLL: Do you plan to get a heat pump?

What is the £5000 boiler heat pump payment?

Britons are being encouraged to replace their gas boilers with heat pumps to help the UK meet net-zero climate targets. The Government aims to install 600,000 heat pumps annually by 2028, a huge uptake compared to the 60,000 last year. But do you plan on installing a heat pump? Vote in our poll.

Britain ranked last in a league table of heat pump installations in 17 European countries with just two new pumps for every 1,000 homes compared to Finland’s 69 per 1,000.

Dr Jan Rosenow, of the Regulatory Assistance Project, explained: “There is an idea that heat pumps don’t work in cold climates, but more than half the households in Norway have one.”

A Government-funded study published last year tested the performance of heat pumps in 742 homes of varying sizes and ages and found that no house type was unsuitable.

Energy Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed as part of the new Energy Security Strategy that new gas boilers will be phased out by 2035, revealing that “people’s homes will be heated by British electricity, not imported gas”.

Some 25 million British homes are heated by gas boilers which produce around a fifth of national greenhouse gas emissions. However, heat pumps are a green energy source, with the only by-product being water.

Heat pumps operate like reverse air-conditioners, converting heat from the air, ground or water source to warm household heating systems.

The Government has offered monetary incentives since last May to help households make the switch, with £5,000 grants towards the cost of an air-source heat pump or 6,000 for a ground-source heat pump. The grant scheme has been extended until 2028.
