Ram sentenced to three years in prison after brutal killing of woman in her 40s

A killer ram has been sentenced to three years in prison after brutally ramming a woman.

The animal was arrested earlier this month in Rumbek East County, South Sudan and spent a week in custody following the death of a woman in her 40s before being handed the bizarre sentence.

Local outlet Sudan Today reported that she was left with multiple broken ribs and fractures after the ram repeatedly headbutted her as she was trying to stand up.

She was left bloodied and later succumbed to her injuries following the attack on the weekend before last.

Eye Radio has identified the dead woman as Adhieu Chaping.

The ram is now set to be confined for three years at a military camp in Aduel County headquarters in Lakes State.

Confirming the bizarre arrest and sentencing, Lakes State police spokesperson Mabor Makuac said: "Our role as police is to provide safety and separate fights.

"The ram was apprehended and currently under custody at a police station of Maleng Agok Payam.

"The owner is innocent and the ram is the one who perpetrated the crime so it deserves to be arrested then later on the case shall be forwarded to customary court where the case can be handed amicably."

However, the owner was also punished in connection with the woman's death.

Duony Manyang Dhal has been ordered to a pay a fine of five cows to the family of the victim. This is known as "blood compensation" in South Sudan, according to The City Review.

He'll likely lose the ram as well when it is finally released, as there is a law in Lakes State ruling that any animal that kills a person is compensated to deceased's family.

The strange case was heart at one of South Sudan's traditional courts under tort law.

A tort is a civil wrong that causes a claimant to suffer loss or harm, resulting in legal liability for the person – or ram – who commits the act.
