Rat-infested Indian restaurant found with kitchen covered in piles of droppings

A rat infestation has forced an Indian takeaway restaurant to shut up shop after the kitchen was found littered with droppings.

The owner of Ranna in Walthamstow, east London, has had to cough up £1,000 and close their business just a week after being inspected.

Environmental Health officers found evidence of a “significant rodent infestation” and took snaps of the piles of poo that had mounted up, My London reports.

As a result, they were slapped with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order and told to pay Waltham Forest Council costs of £1096 at a hearing at Thames Magistrates’ Court this week.

A new extensive cleaning, repair and pest control regime was introduced, but the doors were closed on Wednesday (February 1).

A follow-up inspection will take place before the place is allowed to re-open.

Cllr Khevyn Limbajee, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Waltham Forest Council, said: “I shudder to think how long this risk to public health might have remained were it not for the swift and decisive actions of Council Environmental Health Officers.

“Rather than just a means of punishment, I hope this closure order sets the proprietors on the right course towards improving their health and safety practices permanently and restoring the confidence of their customers as well as the Council.”

It comes just a few months after another Walthemstow takeaway was forced to close due to a “cockroach infestation”.

According to the Waltham Forest Echo, the owners of Etles were ordered to pay £1,009 after horrific images showed cockroaches inside equipment and on the floor.

Cllr Limbajee said of the gruesome photos from inside the place: “These images demonstrate a clear disregard for the safety of customers and as a result we have had no choice but to order the immediate closure of the restaurant.”
