‘Robo-Shrink’ AI bot chats to depressed patients and has already saved 30 lives

A £1million “Robo-Shrink” therapist is to treat patients with mental health problems.

The AI-powered chatbot is being designed by the NHS to help people battling depression.

Its developers claim it has already saved 30 lives. Indian-based programmers claim the bot can be a “fire extinguisher” for what it calls a mental health inferno.

It is hoped it will help people 24/7 as soon as they log on to their computer, rather than wait in an NHS queue for months to see a trained human therapist.

Jo Aggarwal, head of its developer Wysa, said: “Working to put a fire extinguisher in every pocket with Wysa, an emotionally sensitive AI bot that has already saved 30 lives and is used by over a million people from 30 countries across the world.”

But critics fear unless the technology develops, people with serious mental health issues could end up sharing their fears to a programme just a few updates away from chatbots that deal with shopping enquiries.

Health and Social Care Secretary Steve Barclay said: “Artificial intelligence is already transforming the way we deliver healthcare.”

Health professionals aren't the only ones using AI.

Last month, the Daily Star reported how clairvoyants face a bleak future they did not see coming – as their jobs are being taken over by bots.

Millions are turning to AI fortune tellers to forecast what lies ahead.

Instead of visiting psychics and crossing their palms with silver for tarot card readings they are visiting artificial intelligence mediums online which use "sophisticated algorithms and machine learning techniques" to work out what's around the corner.

Experts claim bot clairvoyants are better than live ones because they can draw on wisdom from a vast database and are "unaffected by human emotions or preconceptions."

But the tech move is threatening the future of traditional mystics who ply their trade at fairgrounds and seaside resorts.
