Sainsbury’s shopper says ‘lizard egg’ wedged in her bananas hatched in kitchen

A Scottish student who bought a bunch of bananas from Sainsbury's got the shock of her life when she found a small white egg wedged in the stalk before a "baby lizard" hatched from it.

Shona Mckenzie, 20, from Glasgow said she initially thought the egg may have belonged to a "killer spider" so she diligently brought the Peruvian-grown bunch to her sink to run it under the water.

But she got more than she bargained for from her 88p bunch when the egg fell into the sink and cracked before a small, beady-eyed, pink foetus-like specimen emerged.

She phoned her biologist dad who told her what it was before disposing of it in the bin, the Daily Record reported.

Shocked Shona, who made the discovery yesterday, said: "I don't know how I didn't notice it in the shop.

"I went straight to the self-checkout till so the cashier didn't point it out to me.

"At first I thought it was a killer spider and thought that was the last thing I needed.

"I didn't want it hatching in my bedroom so I took it out to put it under the sink and wash away.

"But when I got to the kitchen the egg fell off and it just hatched!

"It's definitely not a spider. I've never seen anything like it before. I think it might be a lizard as the bananas were from Peru."

Pictures show the bright pink specimen curved into a ball with a tail-like feature, and its shell sitting opposite.

Shona continued: "It wasn't moving. I showed my housemate and sent pictures to my dad but I ended up putting it in the bin.

"What else could I really do? It's not like there's a number I could ring.

"I'm definitely going to be more careful when I pick up my fruit and vegetables now!"

Sainsbury's has been contacted for comment.
