Scousers spend most money on drink as new chart lays bare Britain’s booze habits

Liverpool is a city known for its decent nightlife, and it now appears that scousers love their booze more than anyone else.

A new study from the Office for National Statistics has found that natives of Liverpool spend more money on booze than anywhere else in Britain.

The study discovered that the average Brit drinker spends £515-a-year on boozing at home, but that those from Liverpool actually spend £570 on alcoholic drinks.

This, it found, is a whopping 11 per cent more than the rest of the country.

On the other side of the booze-coin folk from Birmingham spend the least on the demon drink, just £475-a-year.

The booze league table of Britain – how much we spend per person on booze – was created by MoneyTransfers.com.

London came in second with £570, while Norwich, Bristol and Glasgow are next with £5r35, £525 and £520 respectively.

Next is Leicester in sixth place with £515, while Hull's population spends just £5 less than that.

Cardiff, Newcastle and Birmingham round out the top ten with £505, £480 and the aforementioned £475.

Scouser Gary Archibald, 46, was adamant that he wouldn't give up his nighty two pints.

He said: “I look forward to a couple of pints when I get back from work.

“I usually only have two and I reckon that's pretty good, both health-wise and money-wise.

“I only spend about £20-a-week on cans, so I reckon it's well worth it for the pleasure it gives me.”

A spokesman for MoneyTransfers.com said that cutting out booze could save a couple more than £1,000-a-year.

Ther said: “Drinking is seen as an integral part of British culture, consumed by the masses for every occasion between birthdays to funerals.

“Whilst the health implications of habitual drinking are openly discussed, the financial implications are not so acknowledged.

“Amidst the UK plunging into a recession and the cost of living crisis, it may be time for Brits to take a closer look at their spending habits when it comes to drinking.”
