Town ‘buried’ by ‘invasion’ of tumbleweeds ‘blocking streets, homes and drives’

A Texan town has found itself "buried" in tumbleweeds that are "blocking streets, homes and driveways" in an odd-looking turn for the city.

Wolfforth, Texas, has found itself dealing with scenes that look like they were ripped from an over-eager Clint Eastwood western, with more than a handful of tumbleweeds lining the streets.

Images from the West Texas town showcased the sheer amount of tumbleweeds, with a terrifying number collecting in the front of driveways, doors and homes.

The so-called "invasion" of tumbleweed spores has seen the city put together crews of people to tackle the accumulation, in the hopes of reopening the streets.

Doing so appears to have lifted a community spirit, with members coming together to ask the city to help them remove the menacing tumbleweeds.

One city post writing to residents and asking them for help in moving the tumbleweeds read: "Tumbleweeds are blowing in on us as we work, making it extremely difficult. We are asking you to help us help you."

But some residents feel their help may not be wanted, with some told to not throw the tumbleweeds into dumpsters or bins as they could catch fire.

City officials were very clear that nobody should light matches, lighters or flames anywhere close to the weeds.

Their statement read that people should not "get any kind of flame, match, lighter, torch, burner, spark, or anything that could start a fire near the piled up weeds."

Residents are less than happy with how the city have prepared to get rid of the tumbleweeds though, and have already submitted several concerns, Chron reported.

One local wrote: "This lady is still waiting for the city to come and get them away from her front door and garage, it's been 3 days! She isn't able to go anywhere or even get out of her front door."

Randy Criswell, city manager of Wolfforth, said: "I don't want to commit the city to cleaning up every tumbleweed because there are a lot of folks out there that are perfectly capable of doing that."
