Tragedy for family of the ‘Gypsy king’ as his wife and son die just days apart

A well known Romany gypsy family has been rocked by a double tragedy, with the wife and a son of the “Gypsy king” dying within a few days of each other.

Tony “Tiger” Boswell and Gladys Boswell, from Stoke on Trent, died within the space of just six days.

Tiger, 67, died on November 1 following a fight against cancer after grandmother-of-18 Gladys, 91, died on October 26.

Tiger’s funeral, featuring a horse and carriage, takes place this afternoon, reports Stoke on Trent Live.

His dad was the well known Lawrence Boswell, the “Gypsy King”, who died several years ago.

The Boswells are believed to have originally settled in Stoke in the 19th century. Over the years, a lot of the family lived in North Street, part of which became known as The Caravans.

Tiger's niece Rachel McGraw, 31, said her grandfather Lawrence had moved from his caravan and into Gladys's home when they met. Tiger lived in the city with his fiancée, but remained very close to his mum and spent most days at her house.

Tiger, a maintenance man, had been with Cathy for 42 years, and they'd been engaged for 36 of them. He leaves a daughter, Joanne, 38, and two grandchildren – Bradley, 8, and Liberty, 4.

Rachel said: “Gladys was an usherette but she retired quite early having so many children –that was a full-time job. She had also worked on the pot banks.

“She was a well-known lady in Stoke. She used to go to Stoke every day when she was younger – she had lived in her house on London Road since she was a little girl.

“She would walk in with her sister or friends and they would do a bit of shopping. When she got older she went to Tesco three days a week.

“She only stopped going when there was a lockdown. She had covid, but overcame it. With their deaths, we are just sticking together and being there for each other to get through it.”

Rachel added: “I hope Tiger has as beautiful a send-off as my nan. He was a really well-known person in Stoke.”
