Every year thousands of people come forward claiming they have spotted UFOs flying across our skies. Unfortunately, the vast majority of such videos uploaded onto the internet prove to be hoaxes.
But there are at least five occasions where UFO sightings have been confirmed by governments without any real explanation. These include four videos released by the US Pentagon, and one photograph found in the national archives of Costa Rica.
Do these images confirm the existence of extra-terrestrial visitors to our planet? Even governments can't explain what they are. Here, we take a look at some clear images of these sightings.

A picture that was taken over 50 years ago showing what many have said to be the ‘best’ photograph of a UFO ever taken is doing the rounds on the internet after resurfacing on social media.
The sharpened black and white negative shared by UFO enthusiast Esteban Carranza on Twitter shows what appears to be a flying saucer over Lake Cote, Costa Rica in September 1971.
Snapped by aerial photographer Sergio Loaiza using a 100lb map-making camera near the Central American country’s Arenal Volcano in its northern highlands, a metallic disc-like object can clearly be seen on the left-hand side of the high resolution image.
New York Times reporter Leslie Kean, described the image as “the best photograph of a UFO ever taken.” She said: "There’s a clear chain of custody. It’s always been in possession of the Costa Rican government so you know it’s authentic and it’s completely unexplained.”

Footage released by the US Pentagon in 2020 of an unexplained incident that involved two American navy fighter pilots off the coast of San Diego in 2004 more or less confirmed the existence of UFOs.
Lieutenant Commander Chad Underwood took off from the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to investigate the unknown object and filmed the UFO as it moved across the sky, later describing it as a 'Tic Tac'.
The footage had already been leaked in 2007 and 2017, prompting the Pentagon to officially release the images to "clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real".
On releasing the footage, the Pentagon said: "The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterised as 'unidentified'."
Along with the 2004 sighting, the Pentagon also released footage of two sightings by fighter pilots from USS Theodore Roosevelt off the coast of Florida filmed in 2015.
Luis Elizondo, the former head of Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, the Department of Defense's investigatory programme, provided the footage taken from cockpit display data and infrared imagery to the press.
In the first video, a pilot is heard describing seeing a ‘fleet’ of UFOs flying against 120-knot winds, although only one UFO is seen in the footage. The UFO then seemingly tilts to one side.
A second video filmed just a few weeks later shows an object zooming across the ocean while a pilot exclaims: “Wow, what is that, man? Look at it fly!”
F/A-18 Super Hornet pilot Lt. Ryan Graves, who reported his sightings to the Pentagon and Congress, said: “Keeping an aircraft in the air requires a significant amount of energy. With the speeds we observed, 12 hours in the air is 11 hours longer than we’d expect.”
In July 2019, a pyramid-shaped UFO was spotted hovering over the USS Russell. The 18-second video was reportedly gathered by the Pentagon’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) which was formed in 2020 to improve the “understanding of, and gain insight into, the nature and origins UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena)”.
The Pentagon confirmed the authenticity of the green-tinged footage, which was leaked to filmmaker Jeremy Corbell, director of the ‘Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers’ documentary.
Corbell told Fox News: “This is probably the best UFO military-filmed footage certainly that I’ve ever seen, but I think also that the world has ever seen.”
He continued: “This is an extraordinary piece of technology. We need to find out the intent of the operators of these vehicles.
“These craft are not pushing something out the back to go forward. They are gravitationally propelled craft that are transmedium — that can go from space to air to sea without destruction.”
