Rowdy hen parties are ruining York, say locals and traders.

The historic city is overrun with boozers who often make it a “no-go area” during the weekend, say business owners.

Mike Powell, 43, of menswear shop Smarts of York, said from 2.30pm onwards on a Saturday the city is full of “noisy and sometimes quite raucous” hen parties.

He added: “If local people do come in, they know they need to be in and out by lunchtime.”

Another business owner said: “It really is quite dreadful sometimes. People are swearing, shouting and so drunk sometimes they can hardly walk.”

Fun-loving girls love the picturesque city for its “Instagrammable” architecture. In a bid to ease the chaos York Council has published a guidebook for stag and hen parties to encourage better behaviour.

It includes advice on finding public loos and being respectful to other visitors.

York has previously been deemed the "hen do capital of the UK.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell in 2022 asked for the council to do more to help manage hen dos.

She said: “Residents have had enough of being driven out of their city, when they and their families want to enjoy the unique York offer. It is time that council leaders got a grip and made a plan.”

This has been pushed back against people involved in the city's nighttime industry.

Hen and stag specialist Last Night of Freedom owner said: “A city centre is about unity but these plans aim to divide people, effectively putting stags and hens in a pen as if it was a zoo.

“These plans show scant regard for the rate-paying bars, restaurants and hotels that are just recovering from years of crippling covid restrictions.”
