A Wetherspoons customer has outlandishly claimed to have been served "the world's longest chip", but internet sceptics reckon something dodgy is afoot.

Posting in 'Wetherspoons paltry chip count' – a Facebook group where punters analyse the quality of Wetherspoons chips – Sam Mumford bragged about his supposed 18.5in-long monster.

Reporting from The Black Boy pub in Newtown, Wales, Sam wrote: "42 chips served tonight with a chicken burger, along with the world's longest chip, size of a pint of Brewdog."

As evidence Sam posted an accompanying photoshoot with the mega chip in which his pal is seen showcasing the whopper's size next to a pint.

However, as his ground-breaking find started to gain traction in the Facebook group, the other Wetherspoons chip aficionados expressed serious concerns over its legitimacy.

"That's clearly two chips held together Sam do you think we were born yesterday," fumed one person.

"LOOK AT THE FINGER PLACEMENT," commented another.

A third said: "Fraudulent he's holding two chips together!!!"

In the face of growing scepticism Sam posted in the group once more to verify his "magnificent chip".

His second set of images offered a more detailed picture of the chip, revealing what it looked like from different angles. In one, the beast can be seen reaching across the entire width of a Wetherspoons plate.

Unfortunately for Sam, this verification attempt did little to quell the group's concern.

"It's a valid attempt I'll give you that!!!!!" said one sceptic.

Another bluntly wrote: "I call buls***."

Speaking to LADbible, a spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon congratulated Sam on his find but couldn't verify his claims.

They said: "Hats off to Sam for finding what he believes is the longest chip in the world.

"While we can't verify that, we can certainly say that it is a whopper of a chip."
