On Monday, October 4, a meteor lit up the night sky above British Columbia, Canada. But Ruth Hamilton, who lives in the idyllic ski resort of Golden, slept through the whole thing.

Until that is, she was awoken by a loud bang.

"I just jumped up and turned on the light, I couldn’t figure out what the heck had happened," she said.

Ruth sat up in bed to find herself covered in dust and debris from a brand new hole in her ceiling and when she looked down at her pillow, saw a blackened fist-sized rock lying on her pillow.

Unable to immediately explain the strange turn of events, Ruth called the police.

The police officer made enquiries at a nearby construction project to check that there hadn’t been any blasting, but once that had been ruled out there was only one conclusion; space rock.

Ruth told Castlegar News: "We called the Canyon project to see if they were doing any blasting and they weren’t, but they did say they had seen a bright light in the sky that had exploded and caused some booms."

She went on: "I was shaking and scared when it happened. I thought someone had jumped in or it was a gun or something. It’s almost a relief when we realised it could only have fallen out of the sky."

Ruth says she’s "totally amazed" that a rock from space that could potentially be "billions of years old" landed on her pillow.

But, she says, it it had landed a few inches to the right it could have been a very different story.

"The only other thing I can think of saying is life is precious and it could be gone at any moment even when you think you are safe and secure in your bed," Ruth said.

"I hope I never ever take it for granted again."

Ruth contacted her insurers to see if she could get some help repairing the damage to her roof.

She says they’d told her they had never had a claim like this before and would need to visit her home to assess the damage before confirming that she was covered.
