All red list countries removed from TODAY – here are the new rules

ALL of the countries which were originally on the red list have now been removed.

The government announced last week that the remaining red list, which included seven countries, would be scrapped.

The controversial list required returning Brits to pay thousands to quarantine at a mandated hotel for 10 days.

Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Panama, Peru and Venezuela are now no longer on the travel ban red list since 4am this morning.

This means Brits can return from all countries without having to quarantine, as long as they are fully vaccinated, although will still need a lateral flow test after returning.

However, the government has retained the right to add more countries back onto the list if the need arises.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the red list category will remain in place as a "precautionary measure to protect public health" and is"prepared to add countries and territories back if needed, as the UK's first line of defence".

He also said they would keep a few hundred of the quarantine hotel rooms available just in case, adding: "We don't want to have to reset up the system from scratch if a particular concern was seen in a particular country and we wanted to be able to have quarantine as a mandatory facility."

It comes just weeks after the green and amber lists were scrapped, opening up hundreds of countries to UK travellers.

And on October 7, 47 countries were removed from the red list, leaving the former seven on the list.

Brits will still need to check the entry requirements before travelling – last month, Morocco introduced a last-minute UK travel ban, leaving thousands of tourists stranded abroad.

Yet other countries are opening up to Brits – with the United States lifting the travel ban from the UK and Europe for vaccinated passengers.

The restrictions will ease up over 18 months after Former President Donald Trump imposed the halt.

It is hoped Brits will enjoy 'test free' holidays next summer with no traffic light restrictions, the Transport Secretary said.
