British Airways pilot takes off on same flight as his dad – who works as cabin crew | The Sun

A DREAM finally came true for a British Airways flight attendant last week, when he worked on a flight captained by his own son.

Pilot Brendon Buxton promised his father Derek he would one day fly planes for a living, when he was just four years old.

35 years later, he was in charge of a flight from London Gatwick to Malta, with his dad part of the on-board cabin crew.

Though Brendon has been flying planes for BA since 2016, it was a late change of career from his old man that presented the pair with the opportunity to fly together, as part of the same team.

Derek had previously spent time working in criminal law, but switched jobs at the age of 60, after being inspired by cabin crew members on board a flight from Kuala Lumpur in 2018.

Derek, who lives in Bognor Regis, said: “Four years after I followed my own dream and joined British Airways, I was given the very special opportunity to finally fly with my son.

“Never did I imagine I’d witness Brendon take off and land with the controls at his fingers, or hear his announcements over the PA. I couldn’t contain my excitement, and the customers on board loved hearing about our story.

“Many people are surprised to hear that I only started this job at 60, but I have never looked back and I feel so honoured to be part of British Airways.”

Brendon, who lives in Reading, revealed that the flight he had captained with his dad on board was covering the exact route he was on when he decided he wanted to be a pilot as a toddler.

He was thrilled to be able to work with his father, after his career change.

He said: “I think that it is quite a testament to my dad that he changed his career later in life, giving up a very successful position in criminal law to try something new and see the world.

“It was quite a fitting flight. En route to Malta, I remembered that my first flight as a child was to Malta at the age of four – and that was when I decided that I wanted to be a pilot.

"It was fantastic to have my dad on board to share the experience.”

The father and son colleagues also operated the return flight from Malta the same day.
