Campsite owner spends £40k installing a James Bond submarine you can stay in

Every dreamed of snoozing in a submarine?

Thanks to Stewart Dungey, a 68-year-old campsite owner based in the Isle of Wight, now you can.

But this is not just any old submarine. This is the vessel that was used in the 1999 James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough.

As you might have guessed, that means it cost a pretty penny – not just to buy the sub, but to turn it into a space where you can snooze.

Stewart has spent £40,000 buying and renovating the vessel, which he has now named HMS Bond.

Stewart’s son, Rhys, who also co-runs Windmill campsite, discovered the submarine on an auction site.

He said: ‘We had always been on the lookout for a submarine as we wanted something that would make people go “wow”.

‘With the help of the submarine, we have created a very unusual and unique place for people to stay.

‘It was displayed at the dockyard in Chatham and it is a copy of a vintage Soviet victor class nuclear submarine.

‘It is a scaled-down version that was used in the James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough which featured Pierce Brosnan and Robert Carlyle.

‘The submarine is 50ft long and weighs up to 10 tonnes. We brought it to the farm in August 2021.

‘It took us a total of nine months to complete the renovations.’

Stewart and his team spent the winter renovating HMS Bond, starting by stripping out the galvanized buoyancy tanks, miles of hydraulic hoses and a design that enabled the huge replica to actually float and drive in the film.

They then added on a mobile container, which houses the kitchen, shower, toilet, eating area and patio, then used the main body of the submarine as the bedrooms.

There are two double beds plus a single bunk bed, so Stewart says the accommodation can comfortably sleep five people.

And yes, it still very much feels like a submarine inside, even if you’re not in the sea.

‘It comes fully equipped with trap doors, ladders and a periscope, and like the real submarine this has little headroom,’ said Stewart, ‘but it doesn’t lack in character.’

The submarine isn’t the only out-there dwelling at Windmill.

You can also book a stay in an original 1965 helicopter, a ‘Dark Knight’ themed shepherds hut, or a Bollywood campervan.

Plus, while you’re there, make sure to check out the ‘showershack’ – a shower with a sound system and disco lights – the Turdis (yes, the toilets), the silo cinema, and the massive pirate ship.
