EasyJet cancels another 60 flights today

EASYJET has cancelled more flights today, with up to 60 expecting to be cancelled.

The airline has been forced to cancel hundreds of flights in recent days due to staff absences caused by Covid.

EasyJet grounded hundreds of flights over the weekend with another100 cancelled yesterday today.

And more have been affected today, according to the BBC, with around 60 to and from the UK to be grounded.

The airline said that the lack of staff was "double the normal levels" due to Covid, and said they are cancelling flights in advance to be able to give customers enough notice.

A spokesman previously said: "As a result of the current high rates of Covid infections across Europe, like all businesses easyJet is experiencing higher than usual levels of employee sickness."

"We expect to make similar levels of pre-emptive cancellations over the coming days, due to the ongoing high level of sickness."

Travellers have been left out of pocket due to the cancellations, with their holiday plans ruined.

Passenger Lesley Offley said she was due to fly to Austria for her husband's 60th, her first flight since 2019, only to have her flight cancelled.

Travel bosses have warned that long queues and delays could continue for months, due to Covid staff shortages and a slow return to recruitment.

General Secretary of pilots union BALPA Martin Chalk said: "The chaos witnessed at British airports may well be repeated throughout the summer because airlines, laden with debt […] have not yet rehired enough staff.”

He added that he "warned ministers" of Easter disruption, but nothing was done to prevent it.

A source at another airport said, according to the Telegraph, said: “For passengers, the travel experience is going to feel different to what they were used to [pre-pandemic]."

It isn't just easyJet who are being forced to cancel flights due to Covid.

British Airways has reduced its schedule between now and the end of May to try and avoid more travel problems, after thousands of passengers had their flight cancelled due to IT issues.

They cancelled more than 100 flights yesterday, with more expected today.

Holidaymakers have also faced huge queues at Manchester Airport since Saturday, as well as at Dublin Airport, while drivers reported nine-hour queues at the Dover port after the suspension of P&O services.

Even the Eurotunnel was hit with delays up to three hours after a train stopped in the tunnel.
