Europe's most scenic railway journeys revealed

European rail travel is making a serious comeback – new services are connecting more cities and cheaper fares are becoming more common. The best part though? Every single one of Europe’s major train journeys is set in stunning scenery.

And according to Which?, you don’t have to travel far to experience one of Europe’s most scenic railways. The UK’s consumer champion asked its readers to rate their favourite trips (with criteria including comfort, food and drink and value for money) and it turns out you only need to go as far as Wales to experience some seriously top-notch rail travel.

Yes, the Ffestiniog Railway, which runs from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog and snakes through Wales’ breath-taking Snowdonia National Park has been voted Europe’s most scenic railway journey – beating trips through Switzerland and Germany to the top spot.

Whizzing past lakes, forests and valleys, travellers on the world’s oldest narrow-gauge railway can roll down the windows and soak in the Welsh countryside.

The Welsh railway journey beats the Bergen Railway’s 308 miles of track through Norway which transports passengers along the Drammenselva river – a popular spot for salmon fishing.

Two more journeys in Wales make the rankings, as does the magnificent West Highland Line in Scotland – you might recognise the part of its impressive journey from the Harry Potter films.
