Being paid to travel sounds like a dream – but with the right job, it can easily become a reality.
With the world having been effectively shut for quite some time, it’s likely that more people than ever before are looking for ways to escape their everyday life.
If that sounds like you, why not have a gander at some of these very travel-friendly jobs?
After all, if you like something, why do it for free?
Holiday representative
Holiday reps are required to look after clients on package holidays, so you’ll need to be on location at the resort – and you’ll get free flights to far-flung places and free/paid for accommodation as a result.
You’ll have to be on hand to make sure the clients have a good time, but in your downtime, you’ll typically have access to the whole resort and discounts on holidays that you book with the company you work for.
Typical salary: Starts at £450-£525 a month according to graduate careers website Prospects, but there will likely be a commission for any holiday add-ons you sell to clients, such as tours.
Flight attendant
As a flight attendant, you’ll start a shift in one place and end in another – so, of course, the job deserves a place on this list.
Depending on your schedule, you’ll get a chance to explore the destinations of your flights and, at the very least, the employee discount should come in quite handy.
Typical salary: Average base salary is £19,543 according to Indeed.
Tour manager
Similar to holiday reps, tour managers are tasked with making sure individuals on their tours have a fun, safe and educational time.
You’ll accompany your group on their travels – usually by bus, train, or boat – and you’d need to have really good knowledge of the place you’ll be touring. You’ll probably need to know the local language, too.
Typical salary: Starts at £15,000-£20,000 according to Prospects, but accommodation is covered and salaries can vary.
Teaching abroad
Getting a job teaching abroad is a great option for anyone looking to really embed themselves in a new culture.
You’ll move out to a totally new city, or country, and have months at your disposal to explore.
Typical salary: Can vary a lot depending on the country you’re in – Prospects says between £14,000-£25,000
Au pair
If you’re good with kids, finding a family to work for as an au pair can be a great way to settle into a whole new city.
You’ll live and likely eat with the family, weaving into their lives in exchange for helping out with childcare and sometimes housework.
Typical salary: Salaries can vary from country to country – you may get paid ‘pocket money’ rather than an official yearly wage since your cost of living and food would usually be covered.
Charity worker
Depending on the charity you work for, you could end up stationed pretty far from home.
For example, Médecins Sans Frontières needs mental health and medical professionals as well as sanitation specialists, project managers, communications officers and more to help communities all over the world.
Typical salary: This will vary depending on the role – some may be purely voluntary. For example, Médecins Sans Frontières pays project staff get £13,125 per annum and field staff are put on a salary grid after one year.
Ski chalet host
If you know your way around a kitchen and aren’t afraid of the cold, you might think about trying your hand at being a chalet host.
A very popular ski-adjacent job, it would be your responsibility to make sure guests are fed, watered and happy during their stay, and to keep the chalet tidy. Some roles may require you to cook, while others might not. Outside of that, you’ll be free to do your own thing.
Typical salary: Roughly £400 a month according to Best Ski Jobs & Courses, but your flights, food and accommodation are usually paid for – and often so is a ski pass.
Chain hotel staff
While technically travel isn’t part of the job, working for a chain of hotels could give you access to jobs all over the world – all you’d need to do is apply for a transfer.
Holidays can also get a lot easier if your employer offers a discount on accommodation.
Typical salary: Again, this will vary a bit depending on what country you’re and what role you’ve got
