Here's why Sunday's best for a luxury hotel getaway at a bargain price

Forget Saturday – why SUNDAY is best for a hotel getaway, with discounts of up to 50% (often with added extras thrown in)

Do you like to bag a bargain on a hotel stay? Then think about a winter break that takes in a Sunday night rather than a Saturday. Why? Because you can often find 50 per cent discounts. ‘There are significant savings at a number of British hotels on Sundays, often with added extras thrown in,’ says Richard Fraiman of the Good Hotel Guide, which lists properties with discounts at goodhotelguide.com. ‘You may get a complimentary lunch or dinner, or a bottle of champagne, and still pay much less.’

Arts, crafts and a 1920s New Forest pub

In Surrey, the Michelin-star restaurant and award-winning spa are big draws for guests at Pennyhill Park, a grand country-house hotel in acres of parkland. Sunday B&B doubles start at £480 until April, compared with a starting price of £570 on Saturdays (exclusive.co.uk).

Surf’s up… and so is the gin in Cornwall

In Cornwall, the Sunday Stayover at the Talland Bay Hotel not only gives you a 34 per cent discount in February, with B&B doubles down from £320 on a Saturday to £210, but you receive a complimentary three-course Sunday roast for either lunch or dinner. The clifftop hotel has sea views from some of its bedrooms and subtropical gardens skirted by the South West Coast Path. Be sure to try its own-label gin (tallandbayhotel.co.uk). 

In north Cornwall, Fistral Beach Hotel has room-only prices on Sundays from £90 compared with £126 on Saturdays. Overlooking Newquay’s famous surfing beach, the adults-only hotel has 71 contemporary rooms, sublime sea views and a spa (fistralbeachhotel.co.uk). 

If you don’t mind not staying by the beach, the 17th Century St Tudy’s Inn is close to Wadebridge. It has four modern rooms in a converted barn and you can hire bikes to cycle along the Camel Trail. B&B from £95 per room on Sundays, down from £135 on Saturday, until March 13 (sttudyinn.com).

Rooms with a view (of Chatsworth) in the peaks

Enjoy the Peak District without peak prices when you check in at The Cavendish in Baslow on a Sunday stayover. Rooms cost from £268, including B&B, a three-course dinner for two plus half a bottle of champagne. On Saturdays, dinner, bed and breakfast costs from £375 (goodhotelguide.com/special-offers). 

The hotel is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, all but one of the 28 stylish bedrooms look over the grounds of their Chatsworth estate, and you can walk to the house by footpath.

Go Roman around historic Chester

With some of the oldest, longest and best-preserved Roman city walls in the UK as well as a Norman castle and striking Tudor architecture, Chester makes a scenic spot for a city break. A trio of hotels are now offering great Sunday deals. At the charismatic Hotel Indigo, book a Roast And Relax package and you get dinner included, plus breakfast on Monday, with rooms from £92, down from £165 for the room alone on a Saturday (ihg.com). 

Or check in to one of the elegant rooms at the Chester Grosvenor, with its acclaimed restaurant and spa, from £162 on a Sunday, with continental breakfast. The price for an equivalent room on a Saturday is from £270 (chestergrosvenor.com). 

There are just 16 rooms at the Chester Townhouse, including family rooms, but if you’re quick you can get one from £71 on Sunday, room-only, less than half the £159 it would cost the previous night (chestertownhouse.com).

Celtic connections with whisky or whiskey

One of the hotels offering the best added extras among Good Hotel Guide members is the historic Cringletie House in the Scottish borders. It runs Gourmet Sunday packages that include champagne and canapes followed by a seven-course tasting menu with matching wines. The price, which includes a full Scottish breakfast the next day, is £369 for two people, compared with a Saturday rate starting at £400 which includes only a three-course meal, with no drinks (cringletie.com).

 Work up an appetite for the dinner by following the nature trail. Afterwards, settle into a leather sofa fireside with a dram or two before retiring to one of 13 comfortable bedrooms.

If you prefer whiskey to whisky, check in at The Bushmills Inn in Northern Ireland’s County Antrim. The 17th Century inn has a bar lit by gaslight and warmed by peat fires, and delightfully higgledy-piggledy rooms. Capital deals with a taste of the orient

Get a capital deal in London with up to 20 per cent off a Sunday night stay. Page8 is opposite the National Portrait Gallery and a short stroll from Covent Garden. After taking in the sights, return to the rooftop Japanese fusion restaurant and contemporary rooms, where a night on Sunday costs from £193, room-only, down from £242 on Saturdays (pagehotels.com).

Alternatively, stay at The Westminster London, not far from the House of Commons, with a steakhouse and bowling alley as well as the Bao Yum Cafe. Contemporary rooms cost from £119 on Sundays and £146 on Saturdays (hotelwestminster.co.uk).

Country house or Scandi cool in the Cotswolds

For some serious grandeur, check in to one of the suites at Lucknam Park near Chippenham and you will get 30 per cent off the price on Sundays until the end of March. Rates start from £644 a night, room-only. The suites come with a four-poster and views over the rose garden or some of the Palladian mansion’s 500 acres, which include a walled garden dating from the 1830s and an arboretum. Although the Michelin-starred restaurant is open on Fridays and Saturdays only, there is an informal brasserie (lucknampark.co.uk). 

Rugby fan? Then try this one in Cardiff

In Cardiff, rugby fans can stay at The Parkgate Hotel, just a drop-kick from Principality Stadium and operated on behalf of the Welsh Rugby Union. 

Opened last October, the hotel has been created from a former post office and county court, and has contemporary chic rooms and a rooftop spa overlooking the skyline of the Welsh capital.

Hot tubs and hill walks in Shropshire

In the South Shropshire countryside near Ludlow, Fishmore Hall and Spa has 15 rooms in a Georgian building. Head out on various walks from the door and return for some pampering in the woodland spa with an outdoor hot tub offering views over the surrounding hills. It’s almost half-price on a Sunday, with B&B doubles from £99 compared with £175 on Saturdays (fishmorehall.co.uk). 

Or stay in the pretty market town of Ludlow itself, with its cobbled streets and castle. 

The Feathers Hotel is a listed Jacobean building with black-and-white timbered facade and rooms from £74 on Sundays (£119 on Saturdays) (feathersatludlow.co.uk).
