I'm a flight attendant and here is the reason you aren't getting upgraded while travelling

A FLIGHT attendant has revealed why you aren't getting upgraded for free on a plane.

Shauni, a senior cabin crew member, explained the rather insulting reason you are not getting to enjoy first class without paying for it.

She said during the Channel 5 TV show Upgrade Me: Secrets of the First Class: “People upgrade passengers when they are better looking.

"I don't know why that is.”

Crew even have a secret phrase they use if they think you are good looking:

Emily Witkop, who works for Southwest Airlines, said: "For a few years there was a ‘hot coffee’ code among flight attendants."

And late cabin crew member Owen Beddall, who wrote the book Confessions of a Qantas Flight Attendant, said his colleagues would use the word ‘Bob’ to refer to good-looking travellers, which stansds for Best On Board.

Sadly, the only way to get a free upgrade? Cough up the cash.

Love Island star Amy Hart, who used to work as a flight attendant, said on the Channel 5 shows: “The best way to get upgraded is to pay for it.”

Even if seats are empty, you are unlikely to get upgraded to them, which one group of friends found out the hard way after being kicked off the flight when they tried to move to them mid-flight.

According to Traveller: "Airlines do not upgrade economy passengers just because there happen to be empty seats in business or first."

Laura Reynolds, a flight attendant with Virgin Atlantic, agreed that this didn't work, telling the Daily Mail: "You'll do a night flight and you'll have say 15 people in upper class in bed, and then you'll get up for breakfast and you're like 'whoa, we've got 17 now'.

"So two have managed to get in and sleep all night with no one noticing. You have to ask them to kindly return to their seat."

If the flight is empty, then crew are happy for passengers to move so they can lie down on a row of free seats.

Here is the best way to sleep on a plane even if in economy.
