I'm a travel expert and love getting free upgrades – here's how to get a better hotel room without paying | The Sun

A TRAVEL expert has revealed how to get better hotel rooms without having to pay any extra.

It involves a bit of extra prep ahead of your trip, but could mean ten per cent or more off the price of a hotel, or a bigger room.

Melissa Klurman from the Points Guy told Boston 25 News: "When I travel, I know there's a better room, with a bigger bed, a better view and I want to be in that room."

Melissa said the best way to get those upgrades is to show loyalty to a certain hotel chain and by using credit cards associated with them.

She said: "If you love Hilton hotels, it might worth it to get a Hilton branded credit card because that way you're going to accrue more points.

"That way, you're going to be a higher status level and then you're going to get treated a little bit better."

Melissa also recommended ways hotel guests can save money on their hotel rooms by choosing the right booking website and by looking for certain rates.

She said: "Usually I'm finding it's cheapest to go through the hotel.

"I look for a refundable room because having a refundable room means that if the prices go down, you'll be able to rebook so that's something to keep an eye on."

She also suggested looking to see if credit cards offered programmes or discounts.

She said: "Go into all your credit cards, look into loyalty programmes and see if there's discounts available.

"Sometimes they're there and all you have to do is click on them on the app or on the website and you suddenly might get 10 per cent off, or you might get money back.

"It's money in your pocket that you wouldn't have had and all it takes is a few seconds to click on that."
