I'm a travel expert and there are 5 ways you can get your dream holiday on a budget

A TRAVEL expert has revealed five ways you can experience a dream holiday on a budget.

According to bargain hunter Andrea Knowles, factors like the day you book travel can make a huge saving.

1. Always book accommodation BEFORE your flight

Andrea – the resident bargain expert at Vouchers.co.uk – claims that holidaymakers should prioritise booking a hotel before snapping up cheap flights.

She said: "When booking a holiday, many people start the process by looking for the cheapest flights, however, this is rarely the best practice.

"As your accommodation is likely to be your most expensive cost, it should be your priority when booking as you can generate the biggest saving."

One essential thing to remember is to check the hotel you book is accessible from an airport you'd be flying to as well.

2. Book your flight 56 days before you travel

While sometimes savvy shoppers can bag an incredible last-minute deal, research shows that booking on average 56 days before can get the biggest saving.

Andrea said: "After analysing more than 13.2 billion prices across 100 popular routes, the travel search engine, Momondo, found that booking a flight 56 days in advance turns out to be the cheapest.

"However, this also factors in sales so make sure to take it with a pinch of salt.

"Book in advance if you’re in doubt."

3. Find airlines with free luggage upgrades

Many budget airlines like Ryanair no longer allow you to travel with a carry-on small suitcase for free. So what seems like a cheap flight can soon become expensive if taking luggage.

But a handy online tool could help tackle this.

Andrea explained: "It’s definitely worth booking all of your flights via Google Flights as they let you search with a ‘carry-on bag’ option ticked – showing you the true price of a flight."

4. Choose an Airbnb with a washing machine

Staying in an apartment such as an Airbnb rental can come with many budget friendly benefits, such as an equipped kitchen or washing facilities.

Andrea explained how staying in accommodation with laundry facilities means you can take less luggage and make a saving on flight costs.

She said: "Airbnb allows you to search for properties with this specific feature, allowing you to pack light and wash your clothes whilst you’re out there.

"In addition, you should also look for accommodation with a kitchen so you can save money by not having to eat out for all three meals per day."

5. Book a cruise on a Thursday

If you're looking to set sail on an exotic cruise, the day of the week that you book the trip can impact the price you pay.

Andrea revealed: "The price of a cruise can fluctuate throughout the year and is dependent on several factors, such as if there’s been an increase in bookings or the total availability left.

"However, research from Cruise Critic has revealed that prices tend to drop mid-week, with booking on a Thursday likely to get you the best deal."
