I'm a travel expert and you should always choose the left lane to avoid airport security queues

AS airport queues cause chaos for thousands of Brits hoping to leave the UK, experts have revealed how you can avoid the long lines.

One expert explained why choosing the left lane could get you through quicker than if you turn right at security.

The stress of air travel often means we try to rush through security checks without paying much attention, but this could actually cause travellers to get stuck in slower queues.

According to a user on online forum Quora, we subconsciously pick which side to line up on depending on our dominant hand.

And considering the majority of people are right-handed, the lines on the right will be busier than those on the left.

The travel expert also explained that some airports have an extra security line for spill-over passengers located off to the side of the main queues – and it rarely gets busy.

The Quora user, who calls himself an expert on airports, said: “Because they are mostly right-handed, people choose the right line while the left one is often less busy.”

“Some airports also have a hidden security line, away from the rest, often faster than all the rest.”

Airports often use subtle ways to manipulate travellers who are going through to their flight.

Heathrow Airport uses tiles going from white to black to direct passengers to check in desks and security queues.

Customers have been left queueing for hours at airports to get through security in recent days, but it's feared the situation will worsen on Saturday as people arrive home and others set off for an Easter break.

Police are to be drafted in to Manchester Airport this weekend to help solve the crisis after the boss quit after days of travel chaos and warnings passengers will face delays for months to come.

Meanwhile, easyJet and British Airways have been forced to cancel hundreds of flights this week, due to staffing issues.

Long queues and delays could continue for months as a result of Covid staff shortages and a slow return to recruitment.

But it isn't just the airports facing problems – the suspension of P&O services saw queues up to nine hours last weekend coming into Dover.
