I'm a travel expert and you should NEVER take a wheeled-suitcase on a plane | The Sun

A TRAVEL expert has revealed why you should never take a suitcase with wheels if travelling with hand luggage.

While many opt for a wheeled bag for ease, you may find it being taken off you if your flight is busy.

Lee Thompson, co-founder of luxury travel company, Flash Pack explained that wheeled suitcases are more likely to be put in the hold.

Many airlines, especially budget airlines, are forced to do this if lots of people are taking hand luggage onboard as they can't all fit in the overhead lockers

He said: "Try to avoid carrying carry-on luggage that has wheels.

"Very often on packed flights, airlines look for luggage to load on the hold of the aircraft and bags with wheels are the number one target.

The worst UK airlines and airports for lost luggage revealed

"Even if your bag is heavy, shoulder bags always go unnoticed."

But you should avoid soft luggage if you want to check it in as it is more likely to get damaged.

One woman found this out the hard way after her husband received his suitcase bag only for it to be completely shredded while another passenger was given his checked luggage after a flight, only for it to arrive with a gaping hole in the middle.

If you decide to check a bag in, the suitcase to avoid is a plain black one.

Frankfurt Airport boss Stefan Schulte recently warned travellers to avoid black suitcases after the airport struggled with baggage, similar to the problems at Heathrow.

He said it was "hard to distinguish them from each other” with an airport spokesperson adding: “Many people travel with black suitcases on wheels which makes identifying them very time-intensive.”

Don't make it heavy either as it will get damaged more easily.

An airport worker said: "If your bag is over 55lbs, it's gonna have a bad time. How annoyed do you get lifting your own bag into the back of the car?

"Imagine have to do that 200 times – it gets frustrating and tiresome and sometimes we just throw with very little care because they are too heavy to do carefully."
