Outside is an impressive Victorian facade, but inside you’ll find modernity in spades, from the neon lighting above the bar to the plush velvet footstools.

It is a good choice for couples but it’s also family-friendly.

The hotel is a brilliant base for exploring Leeds on foot.

You'll find shops, restaurants and museums on your doorstep and the dock is just a short walk away, home to Leeds art gallery and a host of trendy bars.

The hotel’s brasserie-style restaurant, Chez Mal, has glitzy chandeliers, exposed brickwork and polished tables – and serves great food all day.

Breakfast is a laid-back affair, with a buffet of fresh pastries, homemade granola, fresh watermelon and not-from-concentrate orange juice.

All this is followed by cooked-to-order choices – the Eggs Benedict was tasty and filling.

Spread over five floors, the 100 rooms and suites have an urban, funky vibe, with slate-grey carpets and bright pop art on the walls.

The big, comfy beds feature huge velvet headboards and soft pink throws.
