Man divides opinion after taking girlfriend on holiday for her birthday – but refuses to pay for her | The Sun

A MAN has sparked debate online after taking his girlfriend on holiday for her birthday – only to make her pay for almost everything when they arrived.

In a post on Reddit, the man revealed how he had treated his partner to flights and a hotel as a birthday present, but then expected her to fork out for food and outings once they had arrived.

He wrote: "It felt fair to me that she picks up the bills for our food and outings etc. We didn't speak about this, and it seemed to cause a bit of friction.

"I felt like I'd booked something wonderful for her, and she kept wanting to split the costs of things down the middle.

"The unspoken tension caused us to both not get our wallets out when it came to paying for things, and both expect each other to pay for things.

"I spent a lot more on her gift than she did on mine.

"We didn't have a pre-agreed amount to spend, but when I booked it, she knew it was more expensive than what she had bought me."

He later edited the original post, saying he hadn't made his girlfriend pay for everything, but doubled down on his belief that he was in the right, due to the price of the holiday.

He added: "I didn't mind paying for some things. I just expected her to pay at least more than half, because I had paid a lot to take her on holiday and her gift for me was significantly smaller a few months prior."

Some people understood where he was coming from – one person said: "Your love language must be material things/gifts. Love languages are how you LIKED to be loved, not give it.

"But, if your love language was material things/gifts, your girlfriend should’ve known. I.E. have that conversation with her. If y’all been dating long enough to go on holiday, Y’all been together long enough to already have had this conversation."

Other users however didn't see things that way, with the majority on his girlfriend's side.

One wrote: "The fact she wanted to go 50/50 was perfect, absolutely fair. To expect her to pay more, because your gift was more expensive than what she got you, is ridiculous. Quite frankly, you suck."

Another agreed: "There’s no way you’re this big of an idiot. You took her on a trip for her birthday AND THEN proceeded to ruin it for her, so way to go.

A third commented: "You planned this for her birthday, as a gift, right? So in what universe does it make sense to tell her she has to pay for her gift? Then it's not a gift.

The man is not the only boyfriend to have split opinion on holiday recently, with one upgrading his ticket to first class while leaving his girlfriend in economy.

Meanwhile, another changed his holiday dates so that he would be away with his mates on his girlfriend's birthday, despite promising her that he wouldn't.
