Man slammed for upgrading himself on 12-hour flight – but leaving his wife in economy

A MAN has sparked fury after he upgraded himself to business class during a 12 hour flight – but left his wife in economy.

The passenger asked on Reddit if he was in the wrong after she was left upset by his decision.

He asked on the forum: "So [me] and my wife are going to the United States from Japan for a month for vacation, and when we booked the tickets, we initially thought that we were going to be sitting next to each other, but I had the option to upgrade my seat to business with miles and I did.

"Well, my wife is not too happy about that because she wanted to sit together on the 12 hour flight, but it’s overnight so we’re gonna be sleeping the whole flight so I didn’t think it mattered.

"I told her that and she got upset because she thinks I chose business class over her and that’s rude apparently.

"I said to her that she’s just jealous (in a teasing joking way) and she got upset and told me to ask the airline to see if I can switch my seat back to economy."

He then explained he said "hell no" as he wanted the chance to sit in business class.

However, no-one agreed with him on the forum, with most people saying he was in the wrong.

One person said: "You literally ditched your wife and then mocked her. You are absolutely the a****** here and she is completely right to be upset."

Someone else wrote: "Either upgrade both seats or neither, upgrading just yours comes across as very selfish."

One person said that while they "don't disagree" that sitting next to each on a flight is unimportant, it was that he "prioritised his comfort over his wife's.

Others had their own stories where they were also offered the same opportunity, but didn't take it: "One time, on a 2 hr flight home from Disney, the airline offered to upgrade me to first class for $50. The rest of the family was to be abandoned. Nope. We travel together."

The man has since said he was "buying her the upgrade" so she could sit next to him, after he offered to switch seats but she said she wanted to sit with him.

In 2019, a luxury travel blogger admitted she leaves her kids in economy while she flies first class to long haul destinations like the Caribbean – and she never feels guilty about it.

A study found that four in 10 parents admit they would leave their kids in economy seats when flying if they were offered a free upgrade to first class.

A frequent traveller has revealed the three ways you can try and get a free upgrade on a flight.

If you can't get a first class seat, you can get some first class freebies, according to a flight attendant.

Forget dressing smart though, as this is unlikely to get you an upgrade.

Experts have revealed that you will often have to pay to get upgraded, or be a frequent flyer with the airline.
