Passenger refuses to move seats during flight for child – but people are divided

A PLANE passenger refused to move seats despite a mother's plea to sit next to their child – but people are divided.

The man was travelling on a six-hour flight to see his family and had booked his seat in advance to be near the toilet.

He explained that he had booked the seat because he had Crohn's disease, so needed "quick and easy access" to the bathroom as the condition can cause bowel problems.

He wrote on Reddit: "I get to my seat and start getting settled in, when a woman with a 4yo child comes up and asks me to switch seats to a window seat that was far from the bathroom, so her child can sit with her.

"I politely decline stating I paid extra money to have this seat and need an aisle seat due to a medical condition I have.

"The mother starts making a big fuss and gets the flight attendant involved."

Ryanair passenger divides opinion after refusing to move seats for mum and baby

He said eventually the flight attendant found them another two seats together elsewhere on the plane, but was shamed by his friend for not moving for them

He continued: "I understand a mother needs to sit near a child that young, but it’s frustrating to expect me to give up a seat that I paid extra for and planned to have in advance.

"Especially since she failed to book seats to ensure she could sit next to her child."

He asked if he was in the wrong for not moving for them – but most people were on his side.

Ryanair passenger divides opinion after refusing to move seats for mum and baby

One person wrote: "Even if you didn't have a good reason, you are under no obligation to swap seats."

A third said: "You paid extra to get that a seat. You are not responsible for her inability to plan ahead. Good on you."

A mum also chimed in, saying: "Mom here. When I travel with my kids I always make sure that we will be seated together. That's the absolute minimum I have to do as a parent of young kids."

Others said it wasn't the mum's fault but the airline's.

One mum, who said once booked seats only to be split up, said: "Parents can be f****** entitled, but sometimes it's the giant corporations who will take all the money they can then say their hands are tied who are the problem."

Someone else had a similar problem: "On my last flight, my seat was moved 3 times. I was flying with family. We wanted to be seated together."

A third added: "We paid extra recently to book our seats together with a 2 and a 6 year old. Just found out yesterday they changed our seats and they say there's nothing they can do to sit us together, despite us paying extra to book our seats together when we bought them."

It isn't the first time a passenger was shamed after not moving for a family during a flight.

A Ryanair passenger divided opinion after refusing to move when a woman with a young baby asked if he'd switch seats with her husband.
