Tripadvisor has revealed the top 20 most sought-after summer holiday destinations for Britons this year – and it’s Bembridge on the Isle of Wight that tops the charts domestically and the beach town of Badesi on the northern coast of Sardinia that’s the No.1 trending foreign spot.

Ventnor in the Isle of Wight comes in at No.2 in the domestic ranking, followed in third by the picturesque town of Llangollen, North Wales, and Balmaha on Loch Lomond (fourth).

The rest of the domestic list comprises Salcombe, Devon (fifth); Hayling Island, Hampshire (sixth); Banavie, Scottish Highlands (seventh); Seahouses, Northumberland (eighth); Hayle, Cornwall (ninth); and Looe, Cornwall (10th).

In second place in the foreign list is the mountainous town of Hakone-machi, Japan, and in third is Ksamil, on the Albanian ‘riviera’.

Tripadvisor explains that this is a new entry for 2023 and ‘ideal for those looking for a bargain beach break’, adding: ‘Less famous than other European hotspots, Ksamil’s sandy white shore and crystal clear water gives better-known beach destinations a run for their money.’

When it comes to where they are going, over a third (37 per cent) will take both international and domestic trips, while a similar number (32 per cent) will only travel abroad. The remainder (31 per cent) will make the most of the warmer weather at home, says Tripadvisor, holidaying exclusively in the UK.

However, amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis, Brits are slightly more cautious than international travellers when it comes to spend. Less than half (46 per cent) are planning to spend more on travel this summer, almost 10 per cent below the global average.
