Summer holidays from £169 in Whitby – the 'staycation capital of the North'

WHITBY has always been a popular seaside destination, but the town has now been named the "staycation capital of the North."

Admittedly the accolade came from a local estate based in, you guessed it… Whitby, but they have a point.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Nick Henderson, founder and managing director of Whitby-based Hendersons Estate Agents said: "Whitby is becoming increasingly popular across the country."

"Its reputation as one of the hottest holiday destinations in the UK has never been higher, fuelled not only by the unique beauty of the town and the surrounding countryside, but also by the quality of its retail and leisure offering with outstanding shops and restaurants."

Classic estate agent speak, but he's onto something – last year, Whitby was named the most in-demand places to live on the coast by Rightmove.

The idyllic seaside resort in Yorkshire has transformed over recent years from a fishing port to a bustling tourist town.

It recently had significant investment in the town centre and is now home to a number of restaurants and independent shops.

The town also has a great sense of atmosphere and history – its Abbey, the founding point for the town, dates back to 656 AD, and Church Street is a quaint cobbled street with cottages and houses dating from the 15th century.

Those looking to book a UK break this summer can find some great deals in Whitby:

  • Snaptrip five-night stays in lodges, cottages and apartments from £472 per stay
  • Sykes Cottages four-night breaks from £468 per stay
  • Airbnb Whitby stays from £25 per night
  • Yorkshire Holiday Cottages five-night breaks from £472 per stay
  • Park Dean Resorts four-night breaks in Yorkshire from £169 per stay
  • HolidayCottages.co.uk four-night cottage breaks from £349 per stay

Tourists are also drawn to the North Yorkshire town because of its link with Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.

The author stayed at a guest house in the town's Royal Crescent property in the late 19th century, and drew inspiration for his famous novel ‘Dracula’ from Whitby Abbey and the surrounding area.

Holidays in England can go ahead at self-contained holiday lets from April 12, the Prime Minister has announced, so long as coronavirus rates continue to fall.

From May 17, hotels are allowed to reopen and holiday homes can be let to groups of up to six people from different households or groups from two households with no cap on size.
