A CIRCULAR two-bedroom lodge on the side of a lake has been revealed as the UK's best holiday home.

A nationwide competition to find Britain's best holiday let has found the top staycation destinations.

UK-based holidays have soared in demand since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, with many people continuing to choose them over trips abroad.

Sykes Holiday Cottages launched a competition to find the best holiday let in Britain to champion what we have to offer right here.

Properties were judged on their customer reviews, location and facilities.

Categories include best interior, best quirky holiday let and overall best holiday let in Britain.

Best holiday let and best view – The Sheiling, Scottish Highlands

Despite only being up and running for six months, The Sheiling bagged the title of best holiday let as well as best view.

The circular wooden lodge is on the edge of a loch and boasts a waterside hot tub and wrap-around deck.

It also has a private pier where guests have access to a small rowing boat.

The two-bedroom lodge can sleep up to four people and week-long stays cost £320pp.


Best interior – The Rookery, Lancashire

The Rookery is in an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers views of east Lancashire.

The three bedroom stone cottage has a grass roof and is surrounded by six acres of farmland

It features an open plan living area, six-person hot tub and barbecue in a gated garden.

The cottage can sleep up to six people and week-long stays start from £323.50pp.


Best quirky holiday let – The Carriage at High Barn, Essex

For those of you looking for something a bit more unusual, The Carriage is what it says on the tin: a railway carriage.

The converted carriage is equipped with an open plan living space, kitchen, dining table and double bedroom.

It also has its own private balcony and bathroom with a shower.

Two people can sleep in the one bedroom carriage and week-long stays start from £186pp.


Best renovation – Tithe Barn, Anglesey

What was once a roofless ruin has been transformed into a luxury holiday home.

Tithe Barn, a Grade-II listed building, dates back to 1737 and was once a building where residents came to pay their taxes.

Now the holiday home set over three floors features an open plan living space, games room and wood-burning stove.

The four bedroom property can sleep up to eight people and week-long stays start at £163.63pp.


Best sustainable holiday let – Balvaig, Perthshire

For the eco-conscious among you, this is a great choice.

Balvaig is a four bedroom home in the heart of Scotland, ideal for guests looking for a countryside escape.

There is underfloor heating throughout, provided by an eco-friendly ground source heat pump, a wood burning stove and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Tummel Valley.

The house sleeps up to seven people and week-long stays start from £134.20pp.
