Which countries can I now go on holiday to?

THE government has scrapped the traffic light system, with the amber being merged into the green list.

Instead, countries are either on the Rest of the World "can travel" list or the red list which bans travel – here are the countries now on the open travel list.

Which countries are now on the Rest of the World list?

The new travel rules mean all countries not currently on the red list are open for holidays.

This includes all of Europe including hotspots Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Greece.

It also includes other package holiday favourites Egypt, Turkey, the Maldives and Sri Lanka all of which are no longer on the red list.

Some of the popular countries you still can now visit without having to quarantine when returning to the UK:

  • France
  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • Greece
  • Cyprus
  • Italy
  • Croatia
  • Egypt
  • Turkey
  • Maldives
  • Sri Lanka
  • Dubai

All of the other countries which were on the amber list, are now on the new safe travel list.

The new list will be in enforced from October 4, in time for the school half-term holidays.

What are the rules for green list destinations?

Fully vaccinated Brits will no longer need to pay for expensive PCR tests to return to the UK from green list countries.

Not only has the pre-arrival test been scrapped, but double-jabbed travellers will only need a lateral flow test on day two, which cost around £30.

Unvaccinated Brits will have to quarantine for 10 days as well as pay for a pre-arrival test, and tests on day two and day eight.

This will be introduced next month, although an official date is yet to be confirmed.

Can I go on holiday to all of the countries?

Despite the UK rules letting Brits travel and return to the countries, many of them have their own rules.

Europe hotspots Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal are all welcoming Brits.

However, many destinations including the US, Australia and New Zealand are yet to welcome Brits back.

Airlines and tour operators are unlikely to offer flights to destinations which are not letting UK tourists in, although it is worth checking the entry rules before booking a holiday, on the Foreign Office website.
