Woman left £475 out of pocket after airline cancels flight – and only gives her £20 voucher | The Sun

A WOMAN has claimed that she was left almost £500 out of pocket after her flight was cancelled.

The passenger said that she was forced to book herself both a new flight and a hotel room as part of the inconvenience, but was only given a £20 voucher in compensation.

Gianna (@giannaalexis8) was due to fly from New York to Miami on a Sunday evening, expecting to be home in time for work on the Monday morning.

However, her flight was first delayed and then eventually grounded, meaning she was unable to get back.

American Airlines, who she was due to fly with, rebooked her onto a flight on the Monday evening, which didn't work for her, so she had to rearrange a new route herself.

She then had to book herself a hotel in New York, adding up to a total of $600 (£475).

Woman stuns passengers with over-the-top hygiene routine on flight

In a video on Tiktok, she explained: "Last weekend, I flew American Airlines from LaGuardia To Miami on a Sunday night.

"I got delayed, delayed, delayed, cancelled, and then pushed to the next flight. Delayed, delayed, delayed, cancelled.

"And so I called.Isaid, 'hey, what's going on?' They're like, 'oh, don't worry. We got you on the flight tomorrow at 7.30pm'.

"I'm like, 'I got to go to work'. So they cancelled me on the last flight out for the night, and I had to get a hotel because what else am I supposed to do, lay on the air port floor?

"So I got a hotel, and I got a new flight out, and it costs about $600, the whole ordeal."

In a bid to get some compensation, Gianna emailed the airline with copies of her receipts to ask if there was anything they could do.

Initially, she was delighted to get a response saying she would be given some trip credit.

However, her joy was short-lived when she realised how much she had been awarded.

She continued: "So I email American with receipts. I'm like, 'hey, just so you know, I did have to spend $600. I'm not expecting reimbursement, but just like, I don't know what you guys do for this. So here, this is for you'.

"I got this email today, and it says, 'Given the inconvenience you faced, we issued you a trip credit that's going to come in another email'.

"And I was like, 'Oh, my god, another trip, that's great. That's great'."

Gianna's reaction upon seeing that she had been given just $25 (£20) was simply: "You're kidding me. You're kidding."

The video has since been seen almost 300,000 times, with a lot of people shocked to see the airline's offer.

One wrote: "What a joke."

Another said: "Insult."

However, others were on the airline's side.

One said: "'Expects nothing' gets something anyways, then complains about it."

A second added: "They don’t have to comp you for the hotel, you should’ve just took the rebooking."

Sun Online Travel has contacted American Airlines for comment.
