23-month-old girl killed in house fire on Long Island, cops say

A baby girl was killed in a Long Island house fire early Wednesday, local authorities said. 

The 23-month-old victim was inside the home on Maple Lane in Gordon Heights, Suffolk County, with eight other members of her extended family, when the blaze broke out just after 3 a.m., according to Suffolk County Police. 

After the blaze was extinguished, the lifeless tot was discovered inside the home. She was pronounced dead on scene. 

A 4-year-old boy, 34-year-old woman, 57-year-old man and a member of the Medford Fire Department were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. 

The remaining five family members were unharmed, authorities said. 

A preliminary investigation indicates the fire was not criminal in nature, police said.
