The centre’s youngest cubs, a pair of twins delivered in October, also appeared on the stage. They were named Qiang Qiang and Guo Guo, meaning ‘strong country’.

Four older cubs, such as Ai Jiu and Run Yue, have met the public in previous occasions. While the five younger ones, including Qiang Qiang and Guo Guo, had never appeared in front of the camera before.

The Thursday ceremony was the first time the nine cubs met the public together as a group.

The Chengdu panda breeding centre hosted the festive event before China’s 2021 Lunar New Year, which falls on February 12

The pandas’ public appearance was inspired by the Chinese tradition to celebrate the day by eating Tangyuan, a kind of rice dumplings with sesame fillings, said the centre staff.

The baby bears with their black-and-white fur bear a striking resemblance of the white rice dumplings with black sesame fillings.

‘On the day of the Little New Year, [we] want to give the people all over the country the cutest ‘Tang Yuan’,’ the breeding base wrote in a statement.

‘Wishing you all a happy new year and all the best in the coming year,’ it added.
