Alok Sharma to warn world leaders they must limit temperature rise

Act now or face disaster: Alok Sharma will warn world leaders they must honour promise to limit global temperature rises or risk catastrophe

  • Cop26 President Alok Sharma says world leaders must deliver ahead of conference in November
  • World Health Organisation warned climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity
  • ‘Each country must step up. And as COP26 President I will ensure that every voice is heard,’ said Mr Sharma

Alok Sharma is set to warn world leaders they must deliver ahead of Cop26 – as experts said climate change is the biggest threat to human health in history.

In a speech today in the French capital, the UK minister in charge of the conference will demand they meet promises made in the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C (2.7F).

He is expected to say: ‘Cop26 is not a photo op or a talking shop. It must be the forum where we put the world on track to deliver on climate.’

Cop26 President Alok Sharma has warned that world leaders must deliver on their promises to curb dangerous climate change at the UN Cop26 talks in Glasgow

It came as the World Health Organisation warned climate change is the single biggest health threat facing humanity.

A WHO report said it threatens to undo 50 years of progress in global health and poverty reduction and that ‘the burning of fossil fuels is killing us’.

An open letter from 300 organisations, representing 45million doctors worldwide, also called on negotiators at Cop26 to act.

Cop26 is the next deadline by which countries are expected to bring forward more ambitious plans to meet the targets.

For it to deliver, countries must plan to significantly cut the greenhouse gases by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050, Mr Sharma will warn in his speech.

Agreements must be reached on reducing coal, boosting electric cars, protecting trees and cutting methane emissions.

Richer countries must also commit 100 billion dollars a year to help developing nations cope with climate change.

All major economies in the G20 group of nations, which includes China and India, must put forward new action plans as they have promised to do, he will urge.

There must also be new commitments to support the countries most vulnerable to climate change, he will say.

He is expected to add: ‘It will be an extraordinary COP in extraordinary times. But collectively, we must pull together to make it work. Forging unity from the unfamiliar. Because we have no choice but to deliver.

‘Each country must step up. And as COP26 President I will ensure that every voice is heard. That the smallest nations are sitting face to face with the world’s great powers. As equal parties to the process.’
