At least 15 people dead, dozens injured in Mexico City train wreck

At least 15 people died and dozens were injured when a Mexico City metro train derailed off a collapsed overpass on Monday night, authorities said.

The train collapsed down toward the road, trapping at least one car under rubble, according to authorities.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said a support beam gave out just as a train rode over it.

In addition to the deaths, at least 70 people were injured in the wreck on the metro’s Line 12, the mayor said.

A crane was needed late Monday to help with the rescue efforts.

People were still aboard the dangling train, though it’s unclear if they are alive, the mayor said.

“What has happened on the metro today is a terrible tragedy,” tweeted Mexican foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard.
