New Victorian case found in town on the NSW-Victorian border

An additional new Victorian case has been found on Sunday in a town on the NSW-Victorian border, 540 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.

Health authorities have said a man in his 30s from Mildura has tested positive today, and they believe he was at the MCG Carlton versus Geelong match in the MCC members area on level 2 which is an area of concern.

His infection will be included in tomorrow’s numbers, as it is not part of the 16 local cases announced on Sunday morning.

There are 59 cases connected to the current Victorian outbreak, with 14,000 primary close contacts now in isolation across the state.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said he “took no joy” in there being a new case in the regional town of Mildura, saying it was too early to consider letting the regions out of lockdown.

“It is too early for us to determine whether we’ll be able to come out of this lockdown at midnight on Tuesday night,” he said.

“It is not the day for us to be announcing parts of regional Victoria being let out of this lockdown … that just confirms I think for all of us if we needed any that this moves quickly and a problem anywhere, becomes a problem everywhere.

COVID-19 response commander Jereon Weimar explained the full breakdown of the 16 new local cases announced today:

  • Five additional cases were linked to the Ms Frankie cafe, with one staff member and four patrons returning a positive result.
  • Four new household contacts of the City of Hume outbreak.
  • Three new cases connected to Trinity Grammar, including one student, one staff member and one household contact
  • Two people have now tested positive after attending AAMI Park for the Wallabies versus France game. Mr Weimar said they were sitting in the area of concern and entered through Gate 7, which is now a tier 1 site.
  • One primary close contact of one of the positive cases on Phillip Island.
  • A teacher at Bacchus Marsh Grammar has also tested positive.

“I am convinced that working together we will start to see those numbers nudge and are throwing all of our resources and efforts to making that happen and I just want to thank the community for their cooperation,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Sunday.

The persistent nature of the outbreak has led to tighter restrictions that came into effect on Sunday, including people from three local government areas not being permitted to leave their LGA unless they were essential health or emergency services, workers.

‘Lab leak’ theory can’t be dismissed: the stifled search for COVID’s Patient Zero

What a mess. The world wants to know where the COVID virus came from, but so many obstacles have been put in the way it’s likely we will never know.

Vital information has been withheld, data banks have been tampered with, official investigations have been nobbled, some scientists are too afraid to speak while others are covering their backsides, prestigious journals have put politics before science, and important lines of inquiry have been shut down after accusations of racism.

UK Health minister contracts COVID-19

The new British Health Secretary, Sajid Javid has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the country lifting restrictions, but he says his symptoms are mild and is thankful to have had two doses of vaccine against the disease.

The news of Javid’s infection comes just days before the last remaining legal restrictions on social distancing and masks are lifted in England on July 19, which is being dubbed by some as “Freedom Day”.

Javid took over last month from Matt Hancock, who resigned after breaching social distancing rules.
He isn’t the first politician to test positive. His predecessor, Hancock, was ill with COVID-19 early in the pandemic last year, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson spent several days in intensive care with the virus in April 2020.

Queensland records no new cases

Queensland recorded no new cases of COVID-19 in the community overnight and one new case in hotel quarantine. There were 10,507 tests conducted in the past 24 hours.

The zero new cases result is good news for Queensland which will find out if they won the right to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games next week.

Katie Hopkins to be investigated for breaking hotel quarantine rules in Sydney

Conservative English media personality Katie Hopkins has admitted she has been deliberately flouting infection control in hotel quarantine in Sydney, after flying into the country this week and will now be investigated by the Australian Border Force.

Ms Hopkins told her Instagram followers on Saturday morning she was trying to taunt the guards in her hotel by answering her door naked and without a mask.

“The police officer who checked me in told me when they knock on my door I have to wait 30 seconds ’til I can open the door [to collect food],” she laughed in the Instagram Live video which is no longer viewable on her account. “Then I can open the door but only if I wear a face mask.”

Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews has asked the Australian Border Force to investigate any actions putting health officials and the community at risk.

“It is despicable that anyone would behave in such a way that puts our health officials and community at risk,” Ms Andrews said in a statement.

“I have directed Australian Border Force to immediately consider the facts of this matter and urgently review whether this individual is complying with the requirements of her visa.”

Sixteen new local Victorian cases all linked to current outbreaks

Victoria recorded 16 new local cases on Sunday after the health department declared new exposure sites at two Melbourne CBD bars and a number of bus lines across Bacchus Marsh.

The locally acquired cases are all linked to the current outbreaks, the Department of Health confirmed on Twitter.

Two additional cases were announced in returned travellers in hotel quarantine on Sunday.

There were more than 53,000 test results returned on Saturday and 16,761 vaccine doses administered.
Health authorities have identified 217 potential COVID-19 exposure sites listed across Victoria up to 9.30am on Sunday.
