Travel changes for Victorians entering from NSW

As of 6am this morning, Victoria’s health department has made all remaining NSW ‘green zones’ orange under the state’s traffic light travel system.

This means Melburnians and regional Victorians who aren’t from a border community won’t be able to re-enter Victoria from the NSW side of the border unless they obtain a permit, agree to isolate upon arrival and get a COVID-19 test within 72 hours.

Previously, Melburnians were able to travel freely to and from the NSW side of the border (for example, to Albury) but not any further into NSW due to the state’s COVID-19 outbreak.

The Department of Health says it’s made this change “out of an abundance of caution”.

The changes do not affect border residents who may live in Victoria but work or need to shop in NSW. Those people just need to carry proof of address (such as a current driver’s license) while travelling.

NSW Health clarifies Sydney Airport exposure window

NSW health authorities have issued a late night correction for a COVID-19 exposure site at Sydney Airport.

NSW Health says a positive case visited Domestic Terminal 2 of Sydney Airport on Friday, June 25 between 11am and 11.30am – not Saturday, June 26 as previously reported.

Anyone who visited the terminal on Friday morning is considered a casual contact and must immediately get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received.

For a full list of exposure sites, visit the state health department’s website.

This morning’s headlines at a glance

Good morning and thanks for your company. It’s Friday, July 2. I’m Broede Carmody.

It’s set to be a busy day today, with the Prime Minister and state premiers set to debate international arrival numbers and the nation’s vaccine rollout.

Here’s everything you need to know before we jump into today’s rolling coverage:

  • National cabinet is set to meet today, with state leaders pushing for fewer international rivals until more people in Australia are vaccinated. The meeting between Prime Minister Scott Morrison, premiers and chief ministers is significant given the war of words that erupted earlier this week over whether or not under-40s should receive the AstraZeneca vaccine.
  • In NSW, urgent contact tracing is underway after a positive COVID-19 case visited a mass vaccination centre at Sydney’s Olympic Park. It comes after an unvaccinated aged care worker tested postive. NSW recorded 24 new coronavirus infections in the community yesterday.
  • Residents of south-east Queensland, the Perth and Peel regions of Western Australia and Greater Darwin and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory are waiting to see if stay-at-home orders will lift.
  • In Melbourne, the Gold Coast Suns have defeated the Tigers in Docklands. Every AFL team is currently based in the Victorian capital due to coronavirus outbreaks elsewhere in Australia.
  • And Prince William and Harry have put their differences aside to unveil a statue of their late mother.
