A 59-year-old Australian man has been killed by a shark while swimming in New Caledonia on Sunday.
The man was holidaying in the country and was attacked while swimming near a pontoon about 150 metres from shore at Chateau Royal Beach in Noumea.

Local news outlets say the man was brought on a jet-ski to land where attempts were made to revive him, but he died of his injuries.
Beaches in the area have been closed and a “new shark culling campaign is already scheduled”, The French Pacific Journal reported.
A 49-year-old woman was seriously injured after she was bitten by a bull shark at the same beach on January 29.
She has since been treated in an Australian hospital.
