A shocking image of a small boy dressed as Adolf Hitler at a school Halloween party has stunned education officials.

The photo was taken at a class party that was labelled as a 'Night of Terror' at the school in Presidente Prudente in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The image of the boy, which was first posted on Facebook, showed him dressed in a khaki-coloured suit, similar to the ones Hitler would wear during his reign of Nazi Germany.

The boy's hair was brushed forward into Hitler's distinctive fringe with the former Nazi leader's infamous toothbrush moustache stuck to the top lip of the boy.

Pinned to the left sleeve of the boy's costume was a swastika armband as well as an iron cross medal seen placed on a chain around his neck.

To make matters worse, the boy had stretched his left arm out in a 'seig heil' salute.

The photograph is being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office for Children and Youth in Brazil with the school releasing an apology calling the image that was posted and subsequently deleted, a "serious error".

An apology to the Jewish community was also made by the school who called the Holocaust a "human tragedy" and pleaded that the atrocity is one that should never be forgotten in history.

In Brazil, distributing, manufacturing, commercialising and broadcasting items or pictures that features the swastika logo with the aim of promoting Nazism is punishable by law with a jail term of two to five years.

Marcos Akira Mizusaki, a Justice for Children and Youth prosecutor, told local media of his worry about the attention the young boy is receiving online.

He said: “With regard to possible liability, we will look for it, I will initiate a procedure, I will listen to the parents, I will listen to the school to verify.”
