  • The driver immediately fled the scene, but handed himself in to police yesterday

Police hunting the driver of a car with British plates over the hit-and-run death of a cyclist in Ibiza, have made an arrest.

The suspect, who sources say is from the UK, was formally detained late last night after handing himself in to cops.

Earlier in the day the vehicle involved in Tuesday evening’s accident, a black Jeep Wrangler, was found abandoned about three miles from the scene.

It was towed away so it could analysed by forensic experts.

The dead man has been named as 49-year-old Bernat Ribas, a well-known local sports enthusiast who had taken part in many cycling competitions over the years.

His funeral is due to take place tomorrow.

The man arrested has so far only been identified locally by his initials – S.D.

A well-placed source said early this morning: ‘He is from the UK.’

More details of the incident that led to the cyclist’s death emerged overnight.

The driver of the Jeep Wrangler is understood to have collided head-on with Mr Ribas on a narrow road called the Camino de Benimussa in the municipality of Sant Josep before hitting a rock as he fled the scene.

The cyclist was with a friend who along with a second motorist behind the two men gave police a description of the vehicle.

The right-hand drive Jeep was found by an ecology and education centre a short drive from the scene of the tragedy following a police appeal for information.

Bernat Ribas was a keen cyclist and participated in several races in Ibiza

Ibiza Town mayor Rafa Triguero paid tribute to Bernat on social media after hearing news of the incident, which happened six years after a motorist high on drink and drugs killed 34-year-old cyclist Dani Vinals in another hit-and-run in Ibiza.

‘It’s not only a cyclist on two wheels, because the many lives of many families are on a bicycle.

‘We have just received another sad piece of news, following the loss of Dani not so many years ago.

My sincerest condolences to the dead man’s family and friends and the cycling community.’

Sant Josep Town Hall said in a message of condolence: ‘Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this moment of pain and we extend our most sincere condolences to them.’

Mayor Vicent Roig added: ‘I was very sad to learn that Bernat Ribas left us suddenly after this tragic accident.’
