‘This was a completely avoidable tragedy,’ said New York City Councilmember Justin Brannan in a Facebook post, vowing that an arrest in the fatal crash was ‘pending.’
‘Anyone who knows this area well knows how crowded it can be with people in the middle of the day,’ said Brannan, whose district includes Bensonhurst and nearby Bay Ridge.
‘A driver speeding and blowing red lights in a congested area without regard for anyone or anything must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,’ he added. ‘Praying for all involved.’

Residents gathered to look on with concern after the crash Monday, which came just weeks after another deadly driving rampage in nearby Bay Ridge
The incident on Monday comes just weeks after the driver of a U-Haul truck was charged with murder in a separate deadly driving rampage in a nearby Brooklyn neighborhood.
Police say that Weng Sor, 62, was ‘off his medication’ when he struck eight people on February 13 in Bay Ridge, killing one of them, and claimed he was targeting ‘enemies’.
The rented U-Haul plowed into bicyclists, moped riders and at least one pedestrian, before police eventually pinned the truck against a building after a miles-long chase.
The truck also rammed a police car as it careened along its circuitous route, and the officer inside was among the injured.
Sor was ordered remanded without bail, and is currently being held at the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward. He is next due to appear in Brooklyn court on April 20.
