Bungalows make comeback as demand soars from ageing population

BUNGALOWS are due for a comeback as demand surges from an ageing population.

Builders plan to construct the “land hungry” properties, despite housing policy favouring high-density development.

It follows a drop in the number built each year from almost 30,000 in 1986 to 2,210 in 2016.

Retirement housebuilder McCarthy & Stone wants to build more than 200 — its first in 20 years — at 13 sites.

Five already have planning including Wymondham in Norfolk where half of the 30 bungalows sold inside five weeks.

McCarthy & Stone chief Clive Fenton said: “As the UK’s population rapidly ages, more and more people are looking for retirement housing.

“We have seen huge interest in our bungalows.

“But there is a woeful undersupply of retirement housing.”
