Caleb Hasson Brewer sentenced to 35 years in prison for shooting death of Lakewood man.

A 19-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to 35 years in prison for the shooting death of a 65-year-old Lakewood man.

Caleb Hasson Brewer was sentenced for the March 2020 death of Robert Steige, according to the Jefferson County district attorney’s office.

Brewer pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after reaching an agreement to the 35-year sentence, the district attorney’s office said in a new release.

Steige’s family addressed the court at the sentencing and described the shooting victim as a “devoted caretaker and beloved husband, uncle and friend,” the release said. “The family stated that Robert was very forgiving and they believe that the plea agreement is what he would have wanted.”

On March 9, 2020, Steige was sitting inside his vehicle in the driveway of his home, after returning from grocery shopping, when Brewer, who was attempting to rob the vehicle, shot Steige twice.

“Caleb Brewer left his home armed with a firearm, intending to commit a crime,” said Tariq Sheikh, senior chief deputy district attorney. “He then senselessly and brutally murdered Robert Steige for not giving Mr. Brewer his car keys.”
