Can you get vaccinated in the US if you're pregnant?

THE Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its recommendations regarding pregnant people and the Covid vaccines.

With a resurgence in Covid-19 cases stemming from the highly transmissible delta variant, the CDC updated their recommendations, including a possible booster shot for immunocompromised patients.

Can you get vaccinated in the US if you're pregnant?

On August 11, the CDC urged all pregnant people to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

Previously, the public health agency was vague in its recommendation.

"If you are pregnant, you can receive a Covid-19 vaccine," previous guidance read.

However, armed with new research, the CDC is found that Covid-19 vaccines haven't been found to increase the risk of miscarriage.

"COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for all people 12 years and older, including people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to get pregnant now, or might become pregnant in the future," the new guidance reads.

"Evidence about the safety and effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccination during pregnancy has been growing.

"These data suggest that the benefits of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine outweigh any known or potential risks of vaccination during pregnancy," the CDC adds in the updated guidance on its website.

A CDC analysis of safety data on 2,500 women showed no increased risks of miscarriage for those who received at least one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine before 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Miscarriages typically occur in 11 percent to 16 percent of pregnancies.

The study found miscarriage rates after receiving a Covid-19 vaccine were about 13 percent, which is within the normal range.

At what age can people receive the Covid jab?

As of July, the CDC recommends everyone 12 years and older are eligible to receive the Covid vaccine.

People who are fully vaccinated can resume activities that they did before the pandemic; however, they are recommended to wear a mask indoors in areas of high Covid-19 transmission.

New infection cases around the US continue to rise among unvaccinated people, "breakthrough" infections, which generally cause milder illness, can occur in vaccinated people.

Since May, most states have backed off mask requirements for vaccinated people, and some lifted their mask mandates for everyone.

Ahead of the CDC's announcement, several local governments – including Los Angeles County and St. Louis – began requiring vaccinated people to wear masks again, citing concerns about the delta variant.
