Cartel ‘leader and assassin chief behind brutal massacres’ snared by police

An alleged cartel leader and gangster who led a group of hitmen has been arrested, foreign media reports.

Juan N, alias El Teco, is one of the leaders of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel in Mexico [CSRL] in Mexico, it is claimed.

The criminal group has been locked in a bloody battle with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel [CJNG] for control for the central state of Guanajuato.

El Teco was captured in the state along with several others in an operation on Thursday, February 4.

He has been linked to a massacre in the city of Jaral del Progreso on September 27, 2020, which left 11 people dead.

Juan Refugio “N”, known as El Barbas – supposedly in charge of the cartel’s assassins – was detained in the state of Michoacan on Thursday after a two-month investigation.

A statement from the Guanajuato’s Attorney General said he had “participated in multiple crimes” including “several homicides”.

Refugio has been linked to a massacre which took place in the city of Acambaro May 15, 2019.

Five people were gunned down by armed on motorbikes at a furniture shop.

Similar leadership arrests have been made in recent months, but violence in the state shows no signs of abating.

Last month, nine people were killed in an armed attack at a wake in Guanajuato.

One person was also wounded outside a house where the wake was being held in a neighbourhood in the west of Celaya, the municipal government said in a statement.

Heavy, rapid gunfire could be heard ringing out in video footage shot close to the attack and broadcast by local media.

According to foreign media reports, the gunmen fired more than 60 shots.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office two years ago pledging to reduce record levels of violence, but homicides have continued to test new peaks.
