Chaos hits Heathrow as birds and a single fox ground flights at major airport

A fox caused absolute chaos today (January 2) at Heathrow Airport as it scampered onto the runway and stopped multiple flights landing.

A flock of birds also reportedly grounded a plane at the London airport, which is known to be the busiest in the world and sees passengers flying across the globe on a daily basis.

The fox ran across the 27R runway and halted landings, while a flight from Dubai had to be escorted by fire appliance after reports of a possible tailstrike or bird strike when landing.

According to MailOnline, a spokesperson for Air Traffic Control confirmed that the plane, a British Airways Airbus A350-1041, landed safely.

Many people reportedly took to social media claiming that "several planes" could be seen circling in the air after they were forced to abort a landing, while other people reported seeing blue flashing lights and hearing sirens.

Heathrow Noise, which tweets live updates for Heathrow's runways, wrote: "Good afternoon, due to circumstances beyond our control we will switch our runways at 15:30, landing on the northern runway 27R and taking off from the southern runway 27L."

In other Heathrow Airport news, British Airways passengers were trapped onboard a plane for more than five hours after their pilot tested positive for Covid.

The flight which was heading from London to Barbados, was delayed after the pilot received the news while in the cockpit.

Onboard the flight was England hockey player, Darcy Bourne, 20, who took to TikTok to share her experiences of the incident.

She had got on the flight at 9am, but almost two hours later, the flight still had not taken off.

The passengers were informed that they could not leave as the pilot had tested positive for the virus.

In the video, the pilot can be heard saying: "What we're currently doing is looking for another pilot to take my place and that process is ongoing, but it's not going to happen quickly and at the moment we have got people in the process of trying to find someone."

In the second video, taken in the airport's departure lounge, Darcy says: "Update: they kicked us all off five hours later and gave us all £4 food vouchers."
